Always on the go

Cheshire based mum of 3 sharing our favourite family adventures

Greenhill Alpaca Trekking

It was my Mum who first told me about this lovely little Alpaca farm. She’d been on holiday and by chance had got chatting to the daughter’s owner. Next thing I know, my Mum being the big Alpaca fan she is, had booked us all in on an experience there.

Set on a farm livery, just outside Holywell in Flintshire they have a number of Alpacas for you to meet and walk. When we first arrived we went to a barn area where we met our lovely guides Gail and Halle and our Alpaca’s - Louie and Maple. We were given instructions on how to handle them, including walking and stroking. They both had harness on and were on their best behaviour the whole time!

We then set off across the fields with the rest of the participants, each taking it in turns to hold the reins of our new friends. Along the way Gail told us so much information about Alpacas I felt like one of the world’s leading authorities on them by the end of the walk!

We asked loads of questions too and nothing was too much bother for them to answer. What I also thought was nice, was that as we passed the other animals around the farm the ladies shared their names and backgrounds too. It was very obvious that they cared greatly about all the animals in their care.

The farm has lovely views across the Dee estuary and we were lucky enough to visit on a lovely blue sky day so it made for a scenic little walk.

After the walk we returned to the farm where they’d laid out some drinks and cakes for us which I thought was a lovely gesture.

On the tables they had an arts and craft activity where the kids could colour in wooden Alpacas, which all now sit proudly on their windowsills at home! We did an Alpaca quiz, which if you were listening on the walk you should breeze through! They also presented us with a fridge magnet with our group photo on which they’d taken earlier on the walk.

They didn’t rush us at all to leave and even took the time to show us some of the horses on the farm and feed them some carrots - this wasn’t part of the tour though so I can’t promise you’ll get to do this, but it was very sweet of them.

It costs £30 for 2 people /1 Alpaca which I think is excellent value. They also do specials throughout the year (Christmas & Halloween etc ) as well as children’s birthday parties!

Overall, I’d really recommend the experience, it’s something a bit different to the usual activities for kids and is ran by a very caring bunch of people.

Oh and if you want to know anything about Alpacas I’m your girl!!
